Team & Community Code of Conduct

AT SMITH LAKE FARM

1. Our North Star: Stewardship

We are here because we care about the earth and each other. Whether you are staff, a volunteer, or a guest, your primary role is to leave this place—and the people on it—better than you found them.

  • Respect the Land: Follow our "leave no trace" and regenerative practices.

  • Respect the Living: Treat all farm animals and local wildlife with the patience and care they deserve.

  • Respect the Community: Just like a healthy ecosystem needs biodiversity, our farm thrives on human diversity. We protect the dignity, safety, and authenticity of every person here.

2. Common Sense

A farm is a dynamic, sometimes dangerous place. We don't want to micromanage you, so we rely on your best judgment.

  • Safety is Non-Negotiable: If you aren't sure how to use a tool or handle a situation, ask. No one is ever judged for asking "the basic question."

  • Sobriety on the Job: Enjoying the sunset with a drink/smoke is for off-hours. When working or operating equipment, we stay sharp and sober.

3. The "Come As You Are" Clause

Our farm is a crossroads for people from all walks of life. To keep this a sanctuary, we agree to:

  • Value the Human: We have zero tolerance for discrimination based on race, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

  • Authenticity Matters: We respect and use the chosen names and pronouns of our team, regardless of legal records or history. We support anyone transitioning while with us—you define who you are, not a checkbox.

  • Assume Good Intent: With a diverse crew, communication styles will clash. Start by assuming your teammate means well, and address friction directly and kindly.

  • Keep it Grounded: We avoid "punching down" in humor. If a joke relies on making someone else feel small, it’s not for the farm.

4. Privacy & The Guest Experience

As an eco-tourism and agritourism destination, we are often "on stage."

  • The Guest Lens: We are professional and welcoming to visitors, even when the work is hard. Hold in your hearts that this trip is special to the guests and their family and if it is easy to improve their experience then we should always do so.

  • Safety Over Sales: You have the right to work without fear of harassment. If a guest crosses a line—whether it’s a derogatory coment or a "joke" based on stereotypes—report it to the owners immediately. We prioritize your safety over their booking.

5. Resolving Friction

When things go wrong:

  • Speak Up Early: Small grievances grow into big weeds. If you witness discrimination or harassment, please bring it to the farm owners. We handle all concerns with confidentiality and take them seriously.

  • Accountability: If you make a mistake—whether it’s a broken fence or a hurt feeling—own it, fix it, and move on. We value growth over perfection.

6. Harassment, Discrimination & Reporting Concerns

Smith Lake Farm is committed to providing a work and community environment that is safe, respectful, and free from harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

If you experience or witness harassment, discrimination, or conduct that makes you feel unsafe, marginalized, or disrespected—whether by a guest, coworker, volunteer, or contractor—you are encouraged to report it.

How to Report:
You may report concerns to Clea, or to any team lead or person you feel comfortable speaking with. Reports may be made verbally or in writing. There is no requirement to confront the person involved before reporting.

What to Expect:
All reports will be taken seriously, handled confidentially, and reviewed promptly. Smith Lake Farm will assess the situation and take appropriate action to address the concern and prevent recurrence.

Safety First:
If a situation poses an immediate risk to safety or well-being, we will act right away. This may include removing a guest from the property, separating parties, or adjusting work conditions.

No Retaliation:
Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern or participates in an investigation in good faith is strictly prohibited. Retaliation itself will be treated as a serious violation of this Code of Conduct.

Shared Responsibility:
Maintaining a respectful environment is a shared responsibility. Speaking up helps protect not only individuals, but the health of the entire community.
